The afternoon of January 27, 2018 witnessed a grand event of Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) Shenzhen (China) Public Selection (Final) for 2018 World Summit of Younger Generation. It is the 3rd round of public selection and the final one sponsored by MMUN Guangdong Organizing Committee. Attending this MMUN Final Selection were thirty-six students aged 9 to 17 from Elementary, Middle and High Schools. They were divided into 6 delegations representing Australia, Brazil, India, Kenya, the Philippines and Tanzania respectively.
Among the 36 students entering Shenzhen MMUN Final, there are five students from five Shenzhen pilot schools of ISC Global School Partnership Program. They are Hyde School (Primary), Hyde School (Middle), Keyuan Primary School, Gaoxin Middle School, and Dachong School. The 36 students went through three rounds of public selection among ten thousand participating students.
The youngest one of the ten winning students is 9-year-old Annie (Zihan) Yang from Haide School of Nanshan Second Foreign Languages School (Group), a pilot school of Global School Partnership Program (GSPP) with the International School Connection (ISC). Annie’s extraordinary performance brought her on top list of six winning students from Elementary School group.
ISC Global School Partnership Program provides a platform for students from around the world to have a cross-cultural dialogue and understanding, and to address global challenges as well as UN sustainable development issues. ISC helps schools to become global learning centers, preparing students to become caring and competent global citizens during their schooling years.
The discussion was carried out with the Committee of United Nations Environmental Program on the topic “Protecting Threatened Wild Animal Species on Land, Halting the Loss of Biodiversity – UN Sustainable Development Goals & Aichi Biodiversity Targets”. The flow of debate is in the order of Opening Speech, Informal Consultation, Formal Consultation, Closing Statement, Country Proposals and Voting Procedure, which proceeds during a Model UN Conference.
MMUN has been organized in Shenzhen for consecutive three years. Students have represented China to participate in World Summit in New York in the past two years. The ten winning students out of the thirty-six entering the final will participate, on behalf of China, in MMUN at UN Headquarters in New York in March 2018.
